Gene was born October 9, 1931, in Channahon to James and Helen (Gay) Conroy. He married Eileen Moore on March 31, 1951; and together they spent 70 wonderful years. Gene enlisted in the United States Navy and after serving went to work for Standard Oil. In 1963, he moved his family to the Illinois Valley. He owned Gene and Tom’s Amoco in Princeton, was the head of housekeeping at St. Margaret’s Hospital and managed the 10-33 Volunteer Ambulance Service, he then retired after working for Flow Products Inc. in Chicago.
During his retirement, Gene valued the time spent with his beloved family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Gene also enjoyed being outside and volunteering to help others. During the summer he would spend time fishing and mowing his yard. Mowing brought him great satisfaction as he volunteered to help both family and friends keep their lawns looking pristine.
He is survived by his five children, David (Susan) Conroy of Oswego, Douglas (Kay) Conroy of Ottawa, Thomas (Kay) Conroy of Florida, Jayne (Terry) Pagoria of Aurora, and Joseph (Cari) Conroy of Elburn; twelve grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a brother James (Marilyn) Conroy and sister Pat (late Donald) Conroy.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his granddaughter-in-law, Kai Conroy; his brother William Conroy and sisters Sharon Ciarlette and Georgia Scheidt.
In lieu of flowers, donations made to the family, in Gene's honor, will be donated to the Spring Valley Parks and Recreation Department.
