Shirley Hiland

Shirley Ann (Foss) Hiland, 70, of Ottawa passed away Monday, May 4, 2015 at OSF St. Elizabeth Medical Center. Mass of Christian Burial will be 9:00 Friday, May 8, 2015 at St. Columba Church with Rev. David Kipfer officiating. Visitation will be 4:00 to 7:00 Thursday, May 7, 2015 at Ottawa Funeral Home. She will be buried in St. Columba Cemetery. Shirley was born April 26, 1945 in Ottawa, Illinois to Kenneth and Delores (Sterling) Foss. She married Michael Hiland on October 16, 1965. Shirley was born and raised in Ottawa and attended St. Columba grade school and graduated from Marquette High School in 1963. She was extremely involved with giving of her time, talent, and treasure to many organizations she felt strongly committed to: Marquette May Merriment, Tops, Marquette Fine Arts, St. Columba Turkey Dinner, MHS Class of 1963 reunion and fundraising at Rutland, St. Columba and MHS. While she will always be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, and friend whose passion was caring for others, she loved to play the slots, collect things, shop, and drink Hills Brothers Coffee with her many "cliques". She inspired all of us to never quit in spite of life's challenges which could be attributed to her Norwegian temperament or the sign she was born, Taurus the Bull. Uff- Da! She is survived by her loving family including her husband Michael; her daughter, Lynette (Jeff) Lyngaas of Winfield, IL and their children Daniel, Michelle, Olivia, and Ryan; son, Kirk (Kim) Hiland of Ottawa and their children, Jakob and Megan; and son, Derek (Amber) Hiland of Sycamore and their children Tyler and Carter (2012); and sisters, Dorothy (Lawrence) Mettille of Seneca and Norma Lenac of Lake St. Louis, Mo. She is also survived by many special friends who she held close to her heart. She is preceded in death by her parents, one grandson, Carter and many close friends. Pallbearers will be Jason Hiland, Tim Burke, Jon Stalker, Mark Mettille, Todd Mettille, and Zachary King.
