Nicolas Lane Ragan, 22, of Norfolk, VA, formerly of Ottawa, passed away Tuesday, February 27, 2018 in Norfolk. Funeral Services will be held at 10 am, Monday, March 12 at Ottawa Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 2 - 5 pm, Sunday, March 11 at the funeral home. Burial will be at Riverview Cemetery in Marseilles, with military honors. Nick was born September 14, 1995 in Ottawa to Brian Ragan and the late Glenda Tongate Williams. Nick lived a portion of his life in Alaska with his mom and step-dad, before returning to Ottawa where he attended Ottawa Twp. High School, where he excelled and was a member of the great award-winning Ottawa Twp. High School Band, of which he was very proud. He played the bass clarinet. Upon graduation in 2014, Nick joined the United States Navy, and graduated basic training at Great Lakes Naval Base, Great Lakes, IL in May of 2015. He was based in Norfolk, VA, where he was a member of the HSC-22 Sea Knights Squadron working as a helicopter mechanic. He called them "his birds". He was very proud to have served his country as Petty Officer 3rd Class E-4. He is survived by his father and step-mother, Brian and Kate Ragan; his step-father, Daniel Williams; loving brothers and sisters, Deklan, Kemimayla, and Nahela Ragan, Cerise Ziel, Corbin, Aoibhean, and Meggan Williams; Cailey, Abby, Nathan, and Collin Rowell. Also surviving are his adoring grandparents, Bill and Laurie Ragan, Tom and Leslie Ziel, Matt and Christine Ruane, Barbara Williams; great-grandfather, Ed Glenney USN Veteran; great-uncle and aunt, Dick and Rosemary Anderson; the Ziel/Shipman Family, the Tongate/Valle family, and the Ragan family. Very special people in his life were his cousins, Shawn, Ethan, Ava, and William John Ragan, Kayden West; his uncle and aunt, Brandon and Heather Ragan; Wahku Ziel and Greg Nelson; his sweet niece, Josalyn Lyle; his little nephew, Seamus Williams; uncles, command Master Chief USN Matt Ruane and David Ruane (former E-4 USN); aunts, Donna Ruane and Dawn Ruane Aird; and dear friends, Madison Alderson, Autumn Oley, and Austin Phillips. Nick was preceded in death by his mother, Glenda Tongate Williams; his great grandmother, Joan Glenney; his grandfather, Gerald Williams; and grandparents, Kathaleen and Arvin Tongate. Nick was a quiet man, very kind to everyone, and always had that beautiful smile on his face. He was dearly loved by everyone who knew him and has left an irreplaceable void in the lives of so many family members and friends. Pallbearers will be Brandon, Shawn, Ethan, and Deklan Ragan, Corbin Williams, and Greg Nelson. Memorials may be directed to the family.
