Muriel Barbara (Hasten)"Punch" O'Brien of Ottawa, Illinois died at her home on Friday February 5, 2010. Mass of Christian burial will be 10:00 AM on Tuesday February 9, 2010 at St. Columba Church with the Rev. David Kipfer and Rev.Gerald Meyer concelebrating. Visitation will be 4:00 to 7:00 PM Monday at the Ottawa Funeral Home with Liturgical Prayers at 4:00 PM. Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery. Born on August 28th, 1925 in Chicago, Illinois to Erwin J. and Frances (Swanton) Hasten. She graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Chicago, IL. She was a member of St. Columba Church, St. Francis of Assisi Church, St. Patrick's Church, the Ottawa Boat Club, Deer Park Country Club, and of the Child Welfare Guild of LaSalle County since 1979. Punch married Joseph D. O'Brien on January 25th, 1947 at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Chicago. He died April, 24th 2009. Joe and Punch were the co-founders and first co- chairs of Marquette May Merriment. Since its inception in 1982, May Merriment has raised over 2.5 million dollars for Marquette High School. She is survived by four daughters: Judy O'Brien of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, Molly (Patrick) McIntyre of Northfield, Illinois, Amy (Robert) Bennett of Mokena, Illinois and Bridget (Sean) McGettigan of Ottawa; also by three sons: Joseph D. (Patrice) O'Brien Jr. of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Mark O'Brien of Deerfield Beach, Florida, and Daniel (Connie) O'Brien of Bloomington, Illinois; seventeen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; as well as three sisters: Eula Ryan, Dorothy Daly Kelly, and Mary Lou (Jerry) O'Toole Hillsman all of Chicago, Illinois. She is preceded in death by her husband, one brother: Erwin J. Hasten, one grandson: Joseph D. O'Brien III and one great-great grandson: Keaton Thomas Whalen. Pallbearers and altar servers will be her grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be her son-in-laws. Memorials may be directed to Marquette High School Foundation, Alzheimer's Association or the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research.
