Merlyn Vincent Higgins

July 5, 1929 — December 24, 2025

We are saddened to announce the peaceful passing of Merlyn V. Higgins on December 24, 2025, at the age of 96. He left this world surrounded by the love and comfort of his family and caretakers in his cherished home. Born on July 5, 1929, in Seneca, Illinois, Merlyn was the beloved son of Vincent and Rose Higgins.

Merlyn's life was a testament to dedication, love, and resilience. He was a devoted husband to the late Barbara Ann Timmons, with whom he shared a beautiful marriage beginning on February 15, 1958, at St. Patrick's Church in Seneca. Together, they nurtured a family filled with love and laughter until Barbara's passing. Merlyn was also preceded in death by his parents, his brother John, and his daughter Charlene.

Surviving Merlyn is his sister Aileen, whose bond with him was a source of great joy throughout their lives. He is also survived by his loving children: Gary (Ann), Thomas (Sherri), Terry (Kayce), and William. His legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren: Jenny, Greg (Holly), Alex (Natalie), Alina, Maiya, Ethan, and Aiden, and his adored great-grandchildren: Mckenzie, Tenley, Jaxsen, Gretchen, Briar, Oaklynn, and Elijah. Each of them carries forward his spirit and the lessons he imparted.

Merlyn honorably served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, a commitment that spoke to his sense of duty and patriotism. After his military service, he found his professional calling at Union Carbide/American Hoechst, where his hard work and tenacity were evident to all who knew him.

A man of many talents, Merlyn was a master at fixing things, no matter how challenging the task. His hands were never idle, whether he was tending to his beloved yard or caring for his small vineyard, which brought him endless joy and tranquility.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Lightways Hospice of Joliet and their dedicated staff, as well as to Merlyn's caring and compassionate caretakers, who provided such excellent support in his final days.

In accordance with Merlyn's wishes, a ceremony will be held to honor his life and legacy on May 30, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. at Mount Carmel Cemetery in Morris, IL. Family and friends are invited to gather and share their memories of Merlyn with his family. Though he is no longer with us in body, his spirit will forever be felt by those who had the privilege of knowing and loving him. May he rest in eternal peace, surrounded by the love he so generously shared throughout his lifetime.
