"Mel" 56, a Naperville resident for over 20 years, more recently residing in Seneca, Illinois. At peace, Saturday June 21, after a long battle with breast cancer; fought with optimism, dignity and an unwavering sense of humor and mischief. Born in Waukegan, Illinois, February 3, 1952, Melody grew up in Illinois but retained many fond childhood memories of times spent on the family farms in Upstate New York. She attended York High School, Elmhurst and later obtained a full academic scholarship to Northern Illinois University where she received a Master of Science degree in Microbiology. Melody carried out research at Loyola University Hospital's Cardiovascular Institute. Melody is survived by her loving husband Michael, her step-daughters Sarah and Kirsty and granddaughter Amanda; by her parents, Ralph and Betty McCarthy of Streator, Illinois and siblings Larry, Alicia, Maeva and Carol. Melody was an avid reader, a gourmet cook, fitness fanatic and accomplished gardener. She enjoyed a wide range of interests and activities, even during her long illness. Melody touched many people's lives with an infectious joy for life, and an easy way with people. She will be greatly missed by the family and her numerous wonderful friends. Visitation will be held on Saturday June 28 at 9.00 AM followed by a service at 11:00 AM at Osborne-Nelson Funeral Home, 135 E. Lincoln Street, Seneca. A reception will follow the service.
