Leo P. Hinkey

"I've had a good, long life!" Leo P. Hinkey, 90, of Ottawa, Illinois, passed away Saturday, January 26, 2013. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at St. Patrick's Church in Ottawa with Rev. Joseph Donton officiating. Visitation will be from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, prior to services, at Ottawa Funeral Home. Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery. Leo was born June 30, 1922 in Ottawa, Illinois, to John and Eva (McConville) Hinkey. He married the love of his life, Betty Reilley on January 25, 1947, at St. Patrick's Church. They enjoyed 61 beautiful years together. She preceded him in death on March 15, 2008. January 25, 2013 would have been their 66th wedding anniversary. Leo loved Betty more than life itself and being reunited will bring him great joy and happiness. He is survived by two sons, Bob (Mary) of Glenwood Springs, CO and Tom (Regina) of Spring Valley, IL; a son-in-law, John Wisniewski of Ottawa, IL; six grandchildren, Jamie Ranallo, Julie (Dave) Roach and Trevor, Leah, Jonathon and Sarah Hinkey; and four great grandchildren, Ashley, Amanda, Tyler and Cooper. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty; a daughter, Joanne Wisniewski; his parents; and four brothers, James Frank, Jack, and John Hinkey. Early on, Leo began his long passion for farming. He started on the family farm in Wallace Township and continued throughout his entire life. Leo had a strong work ethic and took pride in a hard days work. In addition to farming, Leo worked at G.E. Plastics. After retiring in 1982, he volunteered at Ottawa Community Hospital by driving the hospital van for 11 years. During their many happy years together, Betty and Leo enjoyed spending time with their family and friends, traveling, and playing cards. Truly, one of Leo's greatest joys was spending time and sharing stories about his 6 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. He stayed involved in all of their achievements and activities and was loved for his support. His wisdom and humor will be missed. Pallbearers will be his grandchildren. Memorials may be directed to St. Patrick's Church or Mooseheart.
