John Hill Jr.

July 19, 1926 — May 20, 2012

John Howard Hill Jr., 85, of Livermore, Calif., passed away May 20 in Livermore. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, at Ottawa Funeral Home. Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery. He was born July 17, 1926, in Earlville, to Ella and John Hill. John graduated from Earlville High School. He served in the ROTC for the Navy while at Notre Dame University and received a masters degree in organic chemistry from Texas A & M. He began his career at Titanium Metals Corp. in Boulder City, Nev., and went to Los Alamos Nuclear Laboratory in 1959. He joined Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in 1960, working principally in the chemistry department until his retirement in 1980. He was an active volunteer for the Veterans Administration. He was a master woodworker who made fine antique reproduction furniture. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Virginia (Looney) Hill; his sisters, Barbara (the late Woodrow) Brown Betty (the late Robert) Kambic, June Sharp, Greta (the late Joseph) Sinchak and Georgia (Paul) Phillip; a brother-in-law, Edward Meyers; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Virginia Meyers and Doris (Thomas) Smith; and two brothers, Russell (Stella) Hill and Donald Hill.
