John Bernardoni

John Bernardoni, 91, of Ottawa passed away Tuesday, February 28, 2012 at Ottawa Regional Hospital and Healthcare Center. Funeral Service will be 11:00 Thursday, March 1, 2012 at Ottawa Funeral Home with Pastor Kevin Garner of Fox River Lutheran Church officiating. Visitation will be 9:00 - 11:00 Thursday, March 1, 2012 at Ottawa Funeral Home. Burial will be in Oakwood Memorial Park. John was born March 21, 1920 in Standard, Illinois to Erio and Ida (Borri) Bernardoni. He served in the United States Navy during WWII. He was a butcher in the family grocery store, Bernardoni's in Naplate, owned Illinois Valley Minerals, developed a dock and shipping facility west of Ottawa, and owned Newtson Iron and Metal. He married Corinne Steinbach February 19, 1939 at Zion Lutheran Church in Ottawa. She passed away April 28, 1998. He is survived by one daughter, Betty (Phil) McDowell of Ottawa; two sons, John (Brenda) Bernardoni of New Lenox, and Bill (Sue) Bernardoni of Ottawa; eight grandchildren, Heather (Kevin) Francis, Karin (Mauricio Sadicoff) McDowell, Ryan (Kristen) McDowell, Jon Bernardoni, Tyler Bernardoni, Billy (Alecia) Bernardoni, Signe Smith, and Todd (Katie Reed) Bernardoni; three great-grandchildren, Ian and Reid Kelly, and Corinne Francis; one sister, Mary Lena Hanrahan of Wheaton; and caregiver Norma Castelli. He is preceded in death by one brother, Frank; and a sister, Mary in infancy. Pallbearers will be Jon, Billy, Tyler, and Todd Bernardoni, Kevin Francis, and John Hayes. Honorary pallbearers will be Dick Terry, Kelly Sutton, Ron Noel, Wayne Aicher, and Wayne Fieldman. Memorials may be directed to the family or to the donor's preferred charity.
