Gertrude R. Hinkey, 101, of Ottawa passed away Wednesday, February 12, 2014 at Ottawa Pavilion Nursing Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:30 Wednesday, February 19, 2014 at St. Columba Church with Rev. David Kipfer officiating. Visitation will be 9:00 to 11:00am, two hours prior to services, Wednesday at Ottawa Funeral Home. She will be buried at Ottawa Avenue Cemetery. Gertrude was born May 3, 1912 in Ottawa, Illinois to John and Maria (Erhartig) Stein. She married Elmer J. Hinkey February 18, 1936 in Ottawa; he passed away November 7, 1978. Gert and her husband were the former owners of Hinkey's Jewelry Store and later, Hinkey's Clock Shop in Ottawa. Volunteering was also a part of her life. She was a volunteer at Ottawa Community Hospital. Gert was also known for her home-style cooking. She made amazing BBQ, tasty German potato salad and mouth watering banana nut cookies. Gert was not only an amazing business woman but also a devoted and faithful wife and mother. Gertrude is survived by her three children, Judy (Sr. Angele) Hinkey, Bob Hinkey, Kathleen (Chet) Tyska, all of Chicago; and a daughter-in-law, Beth Hinkey of Fort Myers Beach, FL.; five grandchildren, Laurie Machnik of Schaumburg, IL., Tim-deceased (Theresa) Hinkey of Ingleside, IL, Terri (Todd) Jackson of Fort Myers Beach, FL., Renee (Craig) Novack of Park Ridge, IL, Kevin and Brian Tyska both of Chicago; and five great grandchildren; Theo Machnik, Kameron Prater, Hunter Jackson, Carly Novack, and Olivia Novack She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents; one grandson, Tim Hinkey; her brother, Ray Stein; and her sister, Faye Newsome. Pallbearers will be her family members. Memorials may be directed to St. Columba Church and to the donor's choice.
