George William Dennis, 89, of Seneca passed away Saturday, July 6th 2013 at Rivershores Nursing Center in Marseilles. Funeral Service will be 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, July 10 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Seneca with Pastor Jason Sprinkel officiating. Visitation will be 4:00-7:00 P.M. Tuesday, July 9th, 2013 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Seneca and one hour before services arrangements our entrusted to the Osborne-Nelson Funeral Home in Seneca. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery in Seneca. George was born December 23, 1923 in Bowen, Illinois, Hancock County to Howard and Delcia (Smith) Dennis. He married Lucille Foehringer on May 13, 1944 in Pontiac, Illinois. She preceded him in death June 7, 2011. George attended schools in Denver, Illinois, Augusta, Illinois, and graduated from Clayton High School, Clayton, Illinois. George was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Seneca. George began his working career in Burlington, Iowa and moved to Seneca to work at the Shipyards during World War II. He then worked at E.I. DuPont Company for 44 years before retiring and then worked part-time at the Super Wash Car Wash for a number of years. George spent many years on the Seneca Grade School Board of Education and many years on the Seneca High School Board of Education serving as President a number of years. George has been a member of the Seneca Lions Club for 60 years and has served as an officer many times. He was an avid sports fan and loved to attend the local school basketball games, football games, softball games, and track meets. He was a lifetime Chicago Cubs fan and continued to watch all of the games. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends who are blessed to have had him in their lives. George was a devoted husband for the 67 years he was married, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by his two daughters, Connie (Larry) Mitchell of Marseilles and Carol Gorham of Seneca; six grandchildren, Bradley (Astrid) of Zurich, Switzerland, Brenton (Michelle) Mitchell of Seneca, Britta (Todd) Robran of Ankeny, Iowa, Michelle (Karl) Howardson of Seneca, Chrissy (Jeremy) Shanks of Seneca, Michael Gorham of Seneca: thirteen great-grandchildren, Brittney (Jerry) Dutko, Joshua Howardson, Tyler, Madison, and Sophie Shanks, Maresha, Kegan and Breklyn Mitchell, Alexandra, David, and Andrew Robran, Paul and Sarah Mitchell; five step great-grandchildren, Jacob, Joshua, Olivia, Sophie, and Michayla Metille; and several nieces and nephews. George was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Lyle Dennis; one sister, Ruth Matthews; and one granddaughter. Pallbearers will be his grandsons and great-grandsons. Honorary Pallbearers will be Pat (Teco) Raibley, Wes Ratcliff, Darryl Rogers, Danny Applebee, Larry Thorson, Joe Robinson, Bob Kein, Butch Applebee and Jerry Barla. Memorials may be directed to Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Seneca Lions Club, and Vitas Hospice.
