OTTAWA -- Eugene "Gene" Humer Jr., 83, of Ottawa, passed away Monday, May 5, at his home. Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Patrick's Church, Ottawa, with the Rev. Philip Halfacre officiating. Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery with military services. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Ottawa Funeral Home, with prayers at 4 and the Knights of Columbus in attendance. Gene was born Sept. 5, 1924, in Ottawa, to Reuben Eugene and Ethel (Bowyer) Humer. He married Marjorie McNally on Sept. 5, 1953, at St. Patrick's Church. He was employed at Libbey-Owens-Ford for 35 years. He served in the U.S. Navy on the USS LST 611 during World War II in the Pacific. He was a member of St. Patrick's Church, American Legion, Knights of Columbus, Ottawa Moose Lodge and Ottawa Elks. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Michael (Barbara) of Champaign and Robert (Kristine) of Chicago; grandsons, Chris and John, both of Tolono, Ill.; and a sister, Rita Furlong of Ottawa. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Irma Bentson. Pallbearers will be Chris and John Humer, Mark Furlong, Don Harris, Bob Schinz and Phil McNally.
