Elsie V. Walters, 88, of Ottawa, Illinois, died Saturday, January 18, 2014, at Pleasant View. Funeral Service will be at 11:00 AM on January 22, 2014, at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church LCMS in Marseilles with the Rev. William Chormann officiating. Burial will be in Stavanger Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11:00 AM on Wednesday at Church. Arrangements are being handled by the Ottawa Funeral Home. Elsie was born April 30, 1925, in Seneca, Illinois, to Osmund R. and Bessie (Falkenburg) Viland. She married James Walters on October 5, 1947 at the Lutheran Church in Seneca; he died May 19, 1983. She attended Seneca schools graduating as valedictorian in 1943. She then worked for the Seneca shipyards in the procurement office. She later worked for the US Post office in Seneca during WWII and again after her family was raised. She retired in 1986 with 22 years of service. She was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church LCMS in Marseilles. She is survived by one daughter, Karen (Tony) Romano and one son, Robin (Annette) Walters, both of Ottawa; two grandchildren, Brent (Jennifer) Walters of Chicago and Nicole (Ray) Weems of Ottawa; and one great granddaughter, Rowan Weems of Ottawa. Her greatest joys in life were her children, grandchildren and great granddaughter. She was a wonderful cook and loved all the animals around her country home. She was preceded in death by her husband; four brothers, Roy, Victor, Severn and Ray Viland; and four sisters, Ruth Rexrode, Theresa Steinmeyer, Josephine Mooney and one in infancy. Pallbearers will be Brent Walters, Ray Weems, Paul Mooney, John White, Scott Mooney and Tim Smith. Memorials may be directed to her church or Pleasant View Lutheran Home.
