Donald Winslow, 90, of Ottawa, passed away Sunday, November 26, 2023 at OSF St. Elizabeth Medical Center.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, November 29, from 4:00pm until 6:00pm at Ottawa Funeral Home. Visitation will also be from 11:00am until 12:00noon on Thursday, November 30, at the funeral home. A funeral ceremony will follow at noon at the funeral home, with Msgr. Mark Merdian officiating. Burial with military honors will be at 2:00pm in the Sheffield Cemetery in Sheffield, IL.
Donald was born April 23, 1933, in Buda, IL, to Franklyn W. and Esther S. (Standard) Winslow. He married Carolyn (Hanley) Halm on August 30, 2002 in Ottawa. Don served in the 4th Div. in the US Army with duty in Germany from 1954-1955.
He worked for Rock Island & CSX Railroad. He enjoyed doing carpentry, yard work and tending to his flower gardens. He and Carolyn were avid travelers and took many trips to Europe. He also liked to volunteer, and was a volunteer at CHO and OSF St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Ottawa for over 17 years and for the Sheffield Rescue Unit. He and Carolyn wintered in Punta Gorda, FL where they made many lasting friendships. He was a member of the Elks, VFW, American Legion, First United Church of Christ , the Isles Civic Association and St Andrews Golf Club.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Winslow; one son, Rendall (Karen) Russell of Wyanette, IL; two daughters, Danette Sweet of Alabama and Darlene (Fred) Viera of Texas; three step daughters, Susan (Bruce) Butchko, Karen Rhodes and Carol Halm; 7 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; 18 step grandchildren; and 19 step great-grandchildren.
Donald was preceded in death by his wife, Camille (Murphy) Winslow in 1980; his parents; and two step-sons, Jim and John Halm.
Pallbearers will be Josh Salz, Grady Alderman, Joe Villarreal, Tommy Cabrera, Aidan Halm, and John Patrick Halm.
Memorials may be directed to a charity of the donors' choice or the Ottawa, Buda or Sheffield Rescue Unit.
