Charles W. Engel, Sr.

Charles W. Engel, 87, of Serena, Illinois, passed away Wednesday, July 24, 2013, at OSF St. Elizabeth Medical Center. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, July 29, 2013, at St. Patrick's Church in Ottawa with Rev. Jules Adator and Rev. Hope Klutsey officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 28, 2013, at Ottawa Funeral Home. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, with military services. Charles was born September 22, 1925, in Ottawa, Illinois, to James and Dorothy (Shull) Engel. He married Mary Beth Searle at St. Patrick's Church on June 14, 1985. He served in the U.S. Navy as a Seabee stationed in the Pacific Theatre in Okinawa during WWII. He retired from LOF after 37 1/2 years. He was a member of St. Patrick's Church, a lifetime member of the VFW, and the American Legion. He is survived by his wife, Mary Beth; his children, Charles (Tammy) Engel, Jr. of Las Vegas, Marcie Miller of Nevada, Vicky (Jeff Grady) Engel of Serena, and Rolen (Denise) Weeks of Iowa; nine grandchildren, Josh, Lacy, Craig, Chadd, Holly, Ashley, Kiersten, Danielle, and Kimberly; one great grandson, Ayden; and one sister, Kate Orvis of Ottawa. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sons, Craig, Tim and William Engel; a daughter, Tina Angel; one brother, John Engel; and three sisters, Marcella James, Lucille Kelly, and Mary Nanouski. Pallbearers will be Tom Thompson, Mike Warren, John Todd, Jason Todd, Kevin Steder, and Leigh Orvis. Honorary pallbearers will be Joe Anderson and Jeff Grady.
