Carl A. Schmitt, 81, of Ottawa, died Monday, May 6, 2013, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria. Mass of Christian Burial for Carl will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, May 11, 2013, at St. Patrick's Church in Ottawa with Rev. Joseph Donton officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, May 10, at Ottawa Funeral Home with the rosary being recited at 4:30. Burial will be at Ottawa Avenue Cemetery with Military Rites being accorded. Carl was born February 24, 1932, in Ottawa, Illinois, to Elmer R. and Myrtle V. (Smith) Schmitt. He married Gladys Marie Sampson on February 14, 1953, at St. Columba Church in Ottawa. Carl was a veteran having served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War; and was awarded two Purple Hearts for being wounded in action. He was a member of the American Legion Post 33 and the Knights of Columbus Council 634. He retired from Libby Owens Ford Company in 1988, after 36 years of service. He loved spending time with his family and will be greatly missed by all. He is survived by three daughters, Pam (Terry) Gross of Frankfort, Darcy Schmitt and Denise Schmitt, both of Ottawa; one son, Rick (Beth) Schmitt of Sandwich; five grandchildren, Lisa (Mark) Yanule, Jay (Stephanie) Gross, Matt (Christina) Gross, Paul (Sherry) Schmitt and Timothy Schmitt; four great granddaughters, Alexis Yanule, Alyssa Yanule, Audrey Gross, and Grace Schmitt; one sister Marcella Schmitt; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys; one son, Michael Joseph Schmitt in infancy; one sister, Catherine Cummings; and two brothers, Harold and Donald Schmitt. Pallbearers will be his grandchildren and nephews Donny Schmitt and Jerry Wold. Memorials may be directed to the family.
