Bernard Vincent Schomas, Sr., known by most as Benny, age 95 of Ottawa passed away Monday, December 7, 2020.
Ottawa Funeral Home & Crematory has been entrusted with arrangements. Military honors will be performed by the Ottawa American Legion Post 33.
Benny was born January 7, 1925 in Ottawa to Vincent and Catherine (Dwyer) Schomas. He married Annabelle Monterastelli on July 1, 1950, and they were married for 49 years before her passing on February 1, 2000. Benny was an avid Chicago Bears fan, and he held season tickets sitting behind the Bears bench for over 20 years.
Benny was a proud veteran of the United States Army, serving from April 1943 until December 1945. During his service in central Europe during WWII, Benny was honored to serve as a combat medic under General George S. Patton. He received many notable awards and decorations during his time overseas, including a European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with a Silver Star, Meritorious Unit Award, WWII Victory Medal, three overseas service bars, and a Croix De Guerre from the French.
He is survived by his children, Bernard "Benje" Schomas, Jr. of FL and Mary Beth Schomas of CO; four grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; sister, Marjorie; and brother, Lester.
