Robert Kammerer, 71, of Ottawa passed away Monday, July 1, 2013 at The University of Chicago Hospital.

Funeral Mass will be 10:00 a.m Saturday July 6, 2013 at St. Mary’s Church in Utica with Msgr. James Swaner officiating. Visitation will be 4:00 – 7:00 p.m Friday July 5, 2013 at Ottawa Funeral Home with prayers at 4:00 p.m. He will be buried in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Utica with military honors.

Robert was born December 10, 1941 in Ottawa, Illinois to Frederick “Frayne” and Edna (Knudsen) Kammerer. He married Carol Fogle on September 23, 1960 in Ottawa, Illinois. He served in the US Airforce as a Jet Engine Mechanic who was stationed at Wurtsmith Air Force Base in Michigan. He and his brother owned and operated Kammerer Auto Parts Inc. He also was a machinist for many years. He was a member of St. Mary Church in Utica and the American Legion.

Bob was an avid midget and sprintcar racecar driver. His biggest accomplishment is his UARA Midget Championship at Joliet Memorial Stadium in 1979. After a long absence in the racing scene, he returned with his grandson, Blake Nimee, for a span of 13 seasons.

He is survived by his loving wife, Carol; his mother; Edna; three daughters, Debi (Loren) Sommerhalder of Danville, CA., Krissy (Kerry) Barnett of Geneva Il. and Kim (Dan) Tsantis of Oswego, IL; six grandchildren, Jordyn and Jake Sommerhalder, Blake and Chase Nimee, Taylor and Brock Barnett; two sisters, Barbara Godwin of Marseilles, Sheila (Dave) Wells of Roswell, GA; one brother, Gerry (Patricia) Kammerer of Naplate.

He is preceded in death by his father, Frayne.

Pallbearers will be Gerry and Scott Kammerer, Kerry and Brock Barnett, Blake and Chase Nimee and Dan Tsantis.
